In 2018, Araujo moved from Boston River in his native Uruguay to Barcelona, made his senior debut that October, and has since played in over 200 matches for the Catalan side.
He concluded last season as captain, recording 38 appearances for Hansi Flick’s team during the 2025-26 campaign.
At a recent press conference, Flick described him as a great person and an outstanding player, while noting the team’s approach differs slightly.
Flick praised Araujo’s pace, strength and ability on the ball, said he had wanted to involve him, felt the defender was open to new ideas, and acknowledged that past events had influenced him.
He added that he had said goodbye that morning and that Araujo seemed happy, calling Liverpool a great club and wishing him well, saying the decision had to be accepted.
The “past” appeared to reference several high-profile moments when Araujo’s errors drew intense scrutiny.
His red card against Paris St-Germain in the 2024 Champions League quarter-finals became a defining episode, with the dismissal helping to swing the tie in PSG’s favour.
He also came under fire for mistakes in the second leg of the 2025 Champions League semi-final loss to Inter, after which Flick publicly backed him.
Last season, during Barcelona’s Champions League 3-0 defeat away to Chelsea, he was sent off just before half-time after a second yellow for a foul on Marc Cucurella.
A week later, he was granted a leave of absence to prioritise his mental health and received professional support and treatment to look after his emotional well-being.
He returned a month on and made 23 appearances over the remainder of the season, starting six times.
Barcelona also benefit financially.
The club have sought a sizeable sale to ease financial strain and, while this move is a loan with an option to buy, Liverpool will cover Araujo’s full salary for the season. As one of Barcelona’s top earners, that amounts to a significant saving.
