‘s pre-season friendly with Malaga ended in surreal fashion on Wednesday, as the Spaniards rolled a penalty into an empty net while Alvaro Arbeloa’s team had already headed for the tunnel.
Malaga drew level in the final minute of normal time when defender Calvin Bassey was penalised for handball, allowing Eneko Jauregi to convert from the spot for 2-2.
That was only the beginning of the confusion.
Former Real Madrid boss Arbeloa was sent off after apparently remonstrating with the referee at full-time, then went straight down the tunnel with his players, who believed the match had finished.
But La Liga side Malaga stayed on the pitch expecting a penalty shootout to decide the Costa del Sol Trophy.
With fans anticipating spot-kicks, Jauregi placed the ball on the spot and scored into the unguarded goal, celebrating with his team-mates in front of the home crowd at Malaga’s Estadio La Rosaleda in southern Spain.
