Born in Figueres in Catalonia, Chavarria began with his hometown side before moving to Olot, where he made his name in Spain’s lower leagues. A 2020 switch to Real Zaragoza offered his first experience at a bigger professional club, and after two seasons in the Segunda División he stepped up to La Liga with Rayo Vallecano in 2022.
The timing proved ideal. Though Rayo weren’t fancied to challenge Spain’s elite, their strong collective framework turned them into awkward opponents. The club has long thrived by identifying undervalued talent and maximizing it, and Chavarria—signed for under £2m—fit that approach perfectly.
At Vallecas, he evolved into a reliable top-flight left-back, blending combative defending with the athleticism the role demands. He made 125 appearances and became a fixture on the left side. Facing elite coaches such as Xabi Alonso—then at Real Madrid—he impressed, notably in a goalless November draw against Madrid where his disciplined, aggressive display stood out. That performance stayed with Alonso, who made Chavarria a priority after taking the Chelsea job.
Chavarria also started last season’s Conference League final, a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. Alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, a £47m signing from Atalanta in July, his arrival gives Alonso the tools to reprise the wing-back system that powered Bayer Leverkusen’s 2024 Bundesliga title. The deal also bolsters depth at left-back following Marc Cucurella’s £51.8m move to Real Madrid in June.
