Pep Guardiola experienced a major confrontation with his captain and nearly broke down in tears as he expressed his frustrations toward the players during what has become his most challenging period as the manager of Manchester City.
The Spaniard stepped down at the conclusion of last season after a remarkable decade at the Etihad Stadium, during which he secured 20 trophies.
A significant low point in his illustrious career occurred during a tumultuous stretch in the fall of 2024, where the team faced nine defeats and only managed a single victory over 13 games.
Guardiola displayed visible signs of distress, particularly when he scratched his face after City conceded a 3-0 lead and ended up drawing 3-3 with Feyenoord in the Champions League.
Beneath the surface, he was also deeply frustrated with his players, a sentiment captured in a new fly-on-the-wall documentary by Amazon Prime titled “A Beautiful Obsession.”
During one intense moment, he confronted then-captain Kyle Walker, who felt targeted and unfairly blamed.
“You keep mentioning my name in every meeting,” Walker remarked after a loss to Liverpool, asserting that his name always seemed to come up.
Walker, elected captain by his peers, also suggested that Guardiola did not support his leadership role.
Guardiola retaliated by suggesting that Walker was taking things too personally, but he couldn’t hide his emotions as he expressed why he chose to extend his contract despite their struggles.
“If I’m the issue, you need to let me know,” Guardiola said, his voice shaking. “I’m not here for the money or just to stay for the sake of it.
“I renewed my contract because I want to be with you, to fight alongside you. I don’t want you to feel like I’m abandoning you.”
Another intense moment unfolded in November 2025 following a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. Guardiola, whose risky decision to make 10 substitutions had failed, threatened to resign in the locker room afterward.
“This lack of courage, passion, and desire to win is unacceptable,” he stated.
“I dedicate my life to you, leaving behind my family and personal matters, and what do you give me in return?”
Expressing his exhaustion and frustration, Guardiola declared, “It’s disgraceful, guys,” while revealing his thoughts of quitting.
Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak later remarked that Guardiola must have threatened to leave “100 times” throughout his career there, but he too was troubled following the Leverkusen match.
In a revealing exchange of voice notes between Khaldoon and chief executive Ferran Soriano, the chairman expressed he was “very angry” after “probably one of the lowest points we’ve experienced.”
Soriano advised that the response should be balanced—neither too negative or aggressive nor overly accommodating.
The four-part documentary series, encompassing the past two seasons, also includes candid discussions in the boardroom about transfer strategies and highlights Kevin De Bruyne’s disappointment regarding his contract extension.
