Lloyd Jones put Charlton ahead in the seventh minute when a long throw was allowed to drop in West Ham’s box, and after the break Tyreece Campbell made it 2-0, capitalising when Konstantinos Mavropanos lost the ball near his own area.
Nuno, the former Wolves and Nottingham Forest manager, said his side created plenty of openings but lacked precision in both boxes, despite having over 77% possession and an expected goals figure of 2.96 to Charlton’s 0.57.
He added that they must defend much better; although they dominated the ball and tried to break Charlton down, it was not easy.
Even so, he maintained they produced numerous chances that they should—and will—finish more clinically in the future.
He outlined a plan to be on the front foot this season, keeping more of the ball and sharpening combinations in the final third and one-on-one play to create scoring opportunities.
He stressed they will keep working, trust the process, come together, and bounce back.
West Ham’s next game is a Carabao Cup tie against Southampton on Tuesday, followed by league fixtures against unbeaten Watford and Wolves.
