Matchweek 1 of the Premier League can provide valuable insights.
Last season, Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford thanks to an early set-piece goal. This result hinted at Arsenal’s league-winning potential and demonstrated that United, who ended the previous season in 15th place, were significantly improved.
Championship playoff victors Sunderland triumphed 3-0 against West Ham, foreshadowing a surprising climb up the table for the Black Cats and relegation for the Hammers. In contrast, Chelsea faced a frustrating goalless draw against eventual midtable side Crystal Palace.
However, it’s easy to misinterpret Matchweek 1 results.
Last season, the revamped champions Liverpool appeared formidable in a 4-2 win over Bournemouth but ultimately finished fifth overall.
Tottenham also excelled in their season opener, dominating Burnley 3-0 in Thomas Frank’s first match. Unfortunately, he was fired midway through the season, and Spurs barely managed to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, Aston Villa managed just three shots in a fortunate draw against Newcastle, who finished 12th, while Villa ended their season in fourth.
While it’s premature to draw firm conclusions from the opening match, we should acknowledge its significance. Instead of grappling with this uncertainty, let’s indulge in some bold predictions based on initial performances from the 2026-27 Premier League season. Some might be misguided, but a few could very well be spot on.
Arsenal Are the Favorites Again: Liverpool, Man City, and Man United Struggle
The Gunners kicked off their title defense with an impressive three-goal performance while only allowing four shots from their opponents.
New signee Christos Tzolis displayed his capability as a starting left winger, quite a shift from expectations given his modest transfer costs. Meanwhile, injured England stars Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice still managed to perform like stars. Kai Havertz also made a healthy start and even scored a goal.
The right-sided trio of Saka, midfielder Martin Ødegaard, and right-back Ben White showcased a fluid possession game reminiscent of their peak in the 2023-24 season. The accompanying passing map illustrates their strong connection:
While Coventry City may not pose a significant challenge, Arsenal has a strong identity, depth, and a consistent track record, with many talented players not even taking part in the opener.
For Arsenal, a disastrous season would likely still see them finish second. In contrast, all other teams that finished in the top five last season showed signs of struggle in their opening matches.
In his first Premier League match as head coach, Manchester City was trailing until the 84th minute against a Bournemouth side that recently parted ways with their manager. Rather than continuing with Pep Guardiola’s successful strategies, Maresca opted to play Marc Guéhi in midfield.
Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Hull City, recognized statistically as one of the weakest teams promoted to the Premier League in recent years.
Aston Villa didn’t fare much better and experienced a dispiriting 4-0 loss to Brighton, reminiscent of an unpleasant visit to a zoo’s monkey house—no beauty, just chaos.
Meanwhile, Liverpool faced a Newcastle side in disarray, having recently dismissed their coach and lost several key players. Liverpool required a last-minute penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai just to salvage a tie, despite playing a high-press game that looked disorganized.
In My Most Humble Opinion: I Was Right on All Counts
Admittedly, I might need to draw this out into a few additional bold claims. However, if the season concluded today, I could confidently say I accurately predicted all team outcomes discussed before the season, highlighting instances where conventional wisdom was misguided.

Brighton Will Challenge Arsenal for the Title
A couple of weeks ago, I declared:
Brighton holds a greater chance of winning the title than the betting odds suggest.
Each season, I reiterate that Brighton has numerous talented young players capable of significant improvement, coupled with the league’s youngest manager, Fabian Hurzeler, who may also enhance his skills. They performed admirably last season, boasting the sixth-best adjusted goal differential after the top five teams mentioned.
After one week into the season…
If you’re to reconsider your opinion about a team after just one match, it should be when they lead 4-0 at halftime against a previous top-four team.

Aston Villa Is Heading for Relegation
While I didn’t predict Villa for relegation, I had expressed concerns over their potential disaster season due to the burden of Champions League commitments, their questionable underlying numbers last season, and the loss of key players over the summer. Notably, Ezri Konsa‘s departure to Arsenal and Ollie Watkins’s absence from the squad for their opening match only intensified my worries.
Their dismal performance against Brighton, marked by a red card for João Gomes mirroring the number they had last season and a freak own goal from Victor Lindelöf, was a serious indication of trouble ahead.
It already appears to be a long season for managing coach Unai Emery and his squad.
Tottenham Is Also Facing Relegation
This isn’t just speculation; they finished 17th for the last two seasons! Despite making substantial new signings this summer, the same management responsible for last season’s performances remains in place.
Though I didn’t forecast Spurs’ relegation, I ponder if there has been a fundamental shift in reality that I’ve missed. Many prominent analysts seem to believe that Tottenham could finish in the top four despite their back-to-back near relegation finishes.
Both Villa and Spurs were teams whose potential downsides were often overlooked, especially indicated by betting odds. Historically, teams that lead in transfer market performances don’t always meet expectations.
Following their match against Brentford, Spurs had more possession yet were significantly outshot, suggesting they remained under pressure the entire game.

Brentford exploited every avenue to generate opportunities, be it set pieces, transitions, or possession play. Perhaps I was right to entertain the notion of Spurs being relegated…
A Club Will Spend Over $100 Million on Mamadou Sangare Within the Next Year
I predicted Brentford, whose odds were lower than several other teams, to be a strong contender for Champions League qualification this season.
Along with Brighton and Arsenal, Brentford has emerged as one of the most consistent clubs in England, with a clear strategic play style and an impressive track record for player recruitment. The lack of discussion around them often reflects their comparatively lower payroll.
Brentford prioritizes aggressive vertical play, pressure, and set-piece execution, frequently targeting player types that align with their data-driven approach. Interestingly, they tend to avoid traditional, ball-dominant midfielders, which complicates evaluation.
This summer, however, they invested significantly (€48 million) in midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens. This was notable not just for the expenditure but also because Sangare complements their style well.
Players from Ligue 1 often adapt effectively to the Premier League, and Sangare’s contributions in defense and midfield make him a valuable asset. Despite gaps in his prior passing record, Brentford’s approach means they don’t heavily rely on ball progression.
As seen against Spurs, his influence on the pitch was profound, as his run set up a crucial goal. Brentford’s ability to generate quality scoring chances and limit opponents’ opportunities suggests that if they find a match-winner in Sangare, they could very well pursue a top-five finish in what could be his final season with the club.
