Former England playmaker Carney was part of the Arsenal team that achieved a historic quadruple in 2006-07, lifting the league title, FA Cup, League Cup and the Uefa Women’s Cup, the precursor to the Women’s Champions League.
After two seasons with the Chicago Red Stars, she returned in 2011 to her first club, Birmingham City. The following year, Carney scored an extra-time equaliser as Birmingham went on to win the FA Cup.
She joined Chelsea in late 2015, captured a WSL and FA Cup double in 2017-18, later captained the side, and retired from playing in 2019.
Carney made her England debut at 17 in 2005, earning 144 caps and scoring 32 goals for the Lionesses. She helped the team secure third place at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
That tournament was one of eight major finals she played for England, and she also represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.
Since retiring, the 39-year-old has forged a career as a broadcaster and analyst, and was appointed by the UK Government to chair an independent review—published in 2023—on the future of domestic women’s football.
