Cristian ‘Kily’ González has been announced as the new head coach of Inter Miami, taking over from Guillermo Hoyos, as confirmed by the club on Thursday.
The Argentine manager steps into the role while the team is in the midst of a five-match winless streak, having suffered four defeats and secured just one draw across all competitions, including the MLS regular season and the Leagues Cup.
“González will officially begin his role once he obtains the necessary work permits. In the meantime, Guillermo Hoyos will continue as the interim head coach until the arrival of González and his coaching staff,” Inter Miami stated in their press release.
González has previous experience coaching at Argentine clubs such as Rosario Central, Unión (Santa Fe), and Platense.
Currently, Inter Miami holds second place in the Eastern Conference with 39 points from 21 matches.
González began his professional playing career at Rosario Central in 1993 and later played for several European clubs, including Valencia and Zaragoza in LaLiga, and Inter Milan in Serie A.
Throughout his club career, he earned a spot on the Argentina national team, where he played alongside current Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi during two World Cup qualifiers in 2005 against Peru and Uruguay.
Hoyos took over as interim manager last April, stepping up from his role as the club’s sporting director after replacing Javier Mascherano. His strong start included a record of 6 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss, earning 19 out of 24 possible points across eight matches, the best start for an Inter Miami coach since the club’s inception in 2020.
“Inter Miami would like to express our gratitude to Hoyos for his commitment and dedication, especially for stepping into this role last April,” the club noted.
Additionally, on the same day, Inter Miami sped up negotiations with Palmeiras, nearing an agreement to transfer 19-year-old attacking midfielder Riquelme Fillipi to Miami. Sources indicate that the deal will involve 60% of the player’s rights for a fee estimated between $5.5 million and $6 million.
