MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has dismissed accusations that his team lacked motivation during their 2-0 defeat to Hull City, calling such claims “lazy.”
Following the loss at MKM Stadium on the season’s opening weekend, Carrick’s side has faced criticism for appearing devoid of passion and energy.

Despite the criticism, Carrick defended his players, asserting that he has no issues with their commitment to winning.
“Teams can lose or win matches for a variety of reasons,” Carrick explained in a press conference. “It’s not solely about effort or lack thereof. There are numerous factors at play. We recognize our areas for improvement.”
“It’s simplistic and unfair to attribute a loss to a team not trying hard enough or lacking passion,” he added.
Looking ahead, United will host Ipswich at Old Trafford on Sunday in search of their first points of the season.
Last season, Carrick’s team experienced two losses against Leeds and Newcastle but rebounded to secure victories afterward.
“Success largely hinges on how we handle setbacks,” Carrick remarked. “In any sport, and particularly in this one, challenges will arise throughout the season, some greater than others.
“The way we respond will shape the character of our team. So far, we’ve managed to navigate those challenges well, both on the field and from one match to the next.
“We faced a setback last week, which was disappointing. However, we’re determined to recover. The players are refocused, have learned from our mistakes, and are eager to push ahead.”
