Chelsea has officially inked a deal for World Cup champion Emiliano Martínez, transferring him from Aston Villa.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has made the move to Stamford Bridge on a three-year contract after spending six years at Villa, where he celebrated winning the Europa League last season.
Villa recently acquired Japan international Zion Suzuki earlier in the transfer window and sought to offload Martínez, who is expected to take on the role of Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper. A potential move to Juventus fell through earlier this month.
Martínez played an integral role in the Argentina squad that won the World Cup in 2022 and was a key player as they finished as runners-up to Spain in the recent tournament this summer.

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has come under scrutiny following Robert Sánchez‘s disappointing performance in Monday’s 3-2 victory over Fulham.
Previous coaches Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and Liam Rosenior have all sidelined Sánchez due to his inconsistent form, leading current manager Xabi Alonso to opt for the experienced Premier League goalkeeper, Martínez.
Chelsea will take on Brighton & Hove Albion in their upcoming Premier League match on Sunday.
