Micky van de Ven: Skipper’s first start of the season. Picked up an unnecessary early yellow but later produced a vital sliding tackle to stop Wissa in the box. 6
Jan Paul van Hecke: Recovered well to block Willock. Calm in possession helped Spurs play through the Newcastle press. Glanced a header close. 6
Andy Robertson: Offered threat going forward before half-time but couldn’t stop Dedic winning the header that led to Elanga’s strike. 5
Rodrigo Bentancur: Much of his graft is subtle; broke things up and regained the ball several times. 5
Sandro Tonali: Nervy return against his old club and still short of sharpness. Played a part in the build-up to both goals against his side. Ironically applauded by the away fans as he was subbed. 4
Mateus Fernandes: First Premier League start. Positive on the ball and his corners asked questions in the first half. 5
Pedro Porro: The World Cup winner operated higher on the right and carved out a couple of looks, with one shot blocked by Hall and a dipping volley just over. 5
Omar Marmoush: Thrown straight in for his debut, a player who has so often troubled Newcastle with Manchester City. Volleyed into the side netting and slipped a clever reverse pass for Robertson. 6
Mathys Tel: Forced a strong save with a fierce effort but also irritated the crowd with loose giveaways. 4
