Marcos Llorente has announced his retirement from international football after playing a pivotal role in helping Spain secure the World Cup title this summer.
At the age of 31, Llorente has made 27 appearances for his national team since his senior debut under Luis Enrique in November 2020, also featuring in Euro 2020 and two World Cups.
The Atlético Madrid player had a significant part in Spain’s victorious campaign in 2026, participating in three matches, including a start against Cape Verde and Uruguay, and coming off the bench in the semifinal against France.
“After much contemplation, I have decided to conclude my time with the national team,” Llorente stated in an Instagram post.
“I recognize that I am still young and, if I continue performing well, I might have more years to play wearing this jersey.”
“This decision was made long before the World Cup. Whether I attended or not, or whether we won or lost, this conclusion was already reached,” he added.
“I understand that many may not grasp my reasoning, and I likely wouldn’t have understood it either from an outsider’s perspective. However, this is a deeply personal choice, one I have considered thoroughly and one that truly resonates with me.”

Llorente has been candid about his long-term ambitions in football over the past months.
“I won’t be one of those players who retires due to physical limitations,” he mentioned in a social media Q&A.
“Before I reach that point, I believe that the demands of football would no longer be worth it to me … The only thing that truly drives me in football is the prospect of winning the Champions League with Atlético.”
“My life is not solely about football,” Llorente remarked. “It centers around my well-being.”
