New NWSL Single-Season…

The Kansas City Current set a new NWSL record for points in a season with a 2-0 victory over Gotham FC at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.

Kansas City’s total of 62 points surpasses the previous record of 60 points set by the Orlando Pride last year. With two regular-season matches remaining, the Current leads the standings by a substantial 19 points over second-place Washington.

A header from Bia Zaneratto put the Current ahead at halftime, and NWSL scoring leader Temwa Chawinga came off the bench to extend the lead in the second half, bringing her goal tally to a league-high 15.

The Current’s 20 victories this season surpass the previous record of 18 set by both Orlando and the Washington Spirit last year.

This team has made league history with several record-breaking achievements this season. They secured the NWSL Shield quicker than any team by the percentage of games played, clinching it in 21 matches of the 26-match schedule.

Kansas City set another league record last month by going 870 consecutive minutes—over nine full matches—without allowing a goal. After their win against Gotham, the Current remains unbeaten in their last 17 league matches.

The team, managed by former USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski, will enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. After clinching the Shield in September, Andonovski emphasized that his focus isn’t on the Current’s historical standing but rather on the team’s improvement and growth.

Last year’s champions, Orlando, achieved the double by winning both the NWSL Shield and the NWSL Championship.

“I just want us to be the best we can be and continue to evolve as a team,” Andonovski stated in September. “If that includes winning a championship, I’d be thrilled with that outcome.”
