Gattuso: I’ll Leave Italy…

Italy’s head coach Gennaro Gattuso has humorously suggested that he might need to go into hiding if the Azzurri fail to qualify for the World Cup for a third consecutive time.

The former World Cup champion, who took over as Italy’s manager in June, has been instrumental in revitalizing the team’s hopes of securing a spot in next year’s tournament, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Italy’s recent 3-0 victory against Israel marked their fourth consecutive win under Gattuso, ensuring their place in the qualification playoffs for the 2026 World Cup.

“If I accomplish the goal, I’ll take the credit. If not, I might just disappear and live far from Italy,” the 47-year-old remarked.

“I’m already quite distant, living in Marbella, Spain, so I might go even further if needed. I’m fully aware of the consequences,” Gattuso added.

Italy currently trails Group I leaders Norway by three points. They will face Moldova on November 13, followed by a crucial match against Norway at home three days later in their final group match.

Despite the significant pressure that comes with being at the helm of a four-time World Cup-winning team, Gattuso expressed that he feels honored to be in this position.

“As I’ve said before, it’s a dream to be here, and I truly mean it,” Gattuso noted.

“There were others with more experience than I have, which is why I accepted this challenge with utmost seriousness. I’m grateful to the Federation, to its president [Gabriele Gravina], and to [head of Italy’s delegation Gianluigi] Buffon. I never anticipated leading the team to 16 goals, but credit goes to the players. Any recognition for me is minimal.

“We must continue on this path. Yes, we work diligently and rest little, but we do this because the victories make it all worthwhile.”
