Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta emphasized the importance of setting a positive example for managers ahead of Diego Simeone’s return to England. This follows a controversial incident involving Simeone and Liverpool supporters. Arteta acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining composure in high-stakes moments.
After the chaotic finale of Atlético Madrid’s 3-2 loss at Anfield in September, Simeone received a one-match touchline suspension from UEFA. He has since served the ban and will be present on the sideline for Tuesday’s match against Arsenal. Regretting the incident, Simeone prepares for the Champions League clash.
“If we react inappropriately, we have a duty to be role models,” Arteta remarked, reflecting on his own past mistakes and attempts to improve. He recognized the challenge of keeping emotions in check when passionately defending one’s club and players, noting how minor moments can influence match outcomes.
“I’ve experienced moments where it’s tough not to react because we live through such intense emotions,” he added, acknowledging the natural urge to celebrate goals alongside players. “While I strive to maintain a level head, there are instances when it’s particularly challenging.”
Arteta is set to face Simeone for the first time in their group stage matchup, seeking to build on Arsenal’s two victories in the Champions League so far. The Gunners’ leader expressed admiration for Simeone’s managerial approach, having drawn inspiration from him during his career.
“I truly respect him and have learned from his experiences,” Arteta stated. “What he’s accomplished at Atlético is remarkable—not just in terms of success but also in the identity and spirit he has instilled within the club. This is a complex feat to achieve consistently over time, and to have done it for 14 years is extraordinary. I look forward to this opportunity to meet him.”
