Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk revealed that the team held a players-only meeting following their 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday. This gathering aimed to address the squad’s struggles, which included a four-game losing streak that was broken with a convincing 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Under the guidance of manager Arne Slot, Liverpool achieved their first win since a Carabao Cup triumph against Southampton on September 23. They managed to turn the tide after falling behind to Eintracht in Germany.
Despite their recent success, Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, currently sit fourth in the standings, four points adrift of leaders Arsenal. Van Dijk explained that the players’ meeting was essential to confront the challenges that led to their losing streak.
“Everyone was down on Monday after the loss to Manchester United at home,” Van Dijk said. “Losing at home is something we rarely experience, and under these conditions, it was tough. We came together to talk, but it wasn’t a crisis meeting. We all understand how quickly things can change even in early October.”
Van Dijk continued, “We did have a proper debrief with the manager, but we felt it was important as players to have our own discussion. I had a few things I wanted to express. This type of meeting isn’t something I arrange after every game. We need to keep it that way!”
Heading into the match against Eintracht, Liverpool aimed to avoid their first five-game losing streak in 72 years. Van Dijk emphasized the necessity of tuning out the external noise surrounding the team due to their recent form.
“Nobody wants to endure four consecutive losses, but that was our reality,” he stated. “We had to remain calm and filter out the external distractions, as those are outside our control. The way to overcome a situation like this is to stick together, maintain focus on the tasks ahead, work on improvement, retain confidence, and embrace the moment. While these things are often easier said than done, pursuing them is essential.”
He added, “In today’s world, there’s always chatter—always someone ready to criticize. We must concentrate on ourselves.”

Liverpool’s success in Frankfurt was led by their summer signing, Florian Wirtz, who notched two assists—his first since the Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace.
After facing scrutiny from fans and former players regarding his performance, Van Dijk advised Wirtz to learn to “embrace” the pressure of playing for a club like Liverpool. “The noise will always be present,” he said. “Playing for Liverpool entails dealing with that scrutiny. It’s part of the experience, and he just has to focus on what we, as teammates, expect from him.”
