Winter Approaches: Premier…

Much like the famous phrase from “Game of Thrones,” “Winter Is Coming” for the Premier League brings not the threat of the undead, but rather a new high-visibility ball designed for enhanced visibility during snowy matches.

The introduction of a winter ball in England’s top league dates back to the 2004-05 season, likely inspired by particularly cold winters, coinciding with the shift from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time every late October.

From the 2008-09 season onward, the idea emerged to refresh the ball annually, leading us to the current release.

This version for the 2025-26 season marks the 20th installment of the winter ball and also kicks off PUMA’s inaugural year as the official ball supplier for the Premier League.

The “Under the Lights” edition of the Puma Orbita Ultimate PL is set to debut on November 8, when Tottenham Hotspur faces Manchester United. This new ball promises “a striking, high-visibility colorway engineered to shine brightly under stadium lights, making every pass, strike, and goal unmistakable”—a helpful feature for VAR.

This season has witnessed an impressive total of 209 goals across 80 matches, with stoppage-time goals accounting for 11 of those—a record share.

One can hope that this vibrant new ball will assist goalkeepers in reducing the scoreline as the season progresses.
