Marcus Rashford has disclosed that his recent transfer to Barcelona wasn’t the first time he had engaged in discussions with the Catalan club regarding a potential move. He believes that the time was finally right to pursue a change after more than two decades with Manchester United.
The England striker has made a strong impression at Barcelona, netting five goals in 12 matches since joining on loan from United.
Rashford noted that he is thriving in “a new environment” after leaving United this summer.
“I spent so many years in one place,” Rashford told ESPN in an exclusive interview ahead of this weekend’s Clásico against Real Madrid.
“People often forget, but 24 years—23 of those were with Manchester United. Sometimes, a change is necessary. I feel like this might be my situation, and I’m really enjoying everything.”
After falling out of favor at Old Trafford under head coach Ruben Amorim, Rashford prioritized a move to Barcelona following his loan spell with Aston Villa.
Now 27, Rashford scored twice in a 6-1 Champions League victory over Olympiakos on Tuesday and is gearing up for his inaugural Clásico.
He mentioned that, had his situation at United been different, the transfer might have occurred earlier.
“I truly believe that things happen when they are meant to,” Rashford said. “This isn’t the first time I’ve discussed joining Barcelona, but for various reasons, it didn’t materialize before. Now, I have the chance to make it a reality.
“I feel like there’s no better time than the present. I just take things day by day.”
“The most important thing for me is to keep improving. Once you retire, you miss everything—the ups and the downs—about the sport.”

Rashford is on a season-long loan at Barça, who hold an option to make the deal permanent at the season’s end.
While a decision by the Spanish club is expected closer to the summer, Rashford, whose contract with United runs until 2028, expressed a strong desire to remain.
“Absolutely,” he affirmed. “I’m relishing my time at this football club, and for anyone who loves the game, Barcelona is one of its historic giants. It’s a privilege to play for them.”
