Madrid’s coach, Xabi Alonso—an iconic midfielder who clinched both the LaLiga title and the UEFA Champions League with Los Blancos—will be experiencing his first managerial El Clásico against Barcelona, leading the charge with star striker Kylian Mbappé in exceptional form.

Last season, Barça’s head coach Hansi Flick achieved a remarkable feat by sweeping all four clashes against Madrid in his debut season. Young sensation Lamine Yamal played a pivotal role in those victories and could prove decisive once again in Madrid.

ESPN’s Alex Kirkland and Sam Marsden break down the current form, historical matchups, latest team updates, and key battles as we approach the 262nd edition of El Clásico.

All-time head-to-head: Barça poised to level up with a win

Historically, Real Madrid has enjoyed an edge in their encounters with Barcelona, dating back to the 1930s. Over the years, both clubs have experienced phases of dominance, with Madrid in the 1960s and Barça in the 1970s and ’80s. However, the balance of power shifted in the last two decades. Between 2008 and 2012, for instance, Madrid secured just one win from 14 matches across all competitions, including memorable defeats like the 6-2 and 5-0 losses during Pep Guardiola’s tenure at Barça.

In recent years, results have been more balanced—Barça went unbeaten in seven Clásicos from 2017 to 2019, while Madrid held an unbeaten stretch of six matches from 2019 to 2022. Nevertheless, Barça’s four victories last season have placed them close to matching Madrid in all-time head-to-head statistics. — Kirkland

What transpired last season?

In a surprising turn of events, Barcelona dominated Madrid last season. Uncertainties loomed over the Blaugrana at the campaign’s onset, particularly regarding new coach Flick’s effectiveness with a youthful squad. Meanwhile, Madrid, fresh off winning LaLiga and the Champions League, added superstar Kylian Mbappé to their lineup.

However, logic took a backseat in the Clásico, with Barça showcasing exceptional attacking prowess, scoring 16 goals across four victories against Madrid. They triumphed in both league matches en route to the title and in finals for the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa. In the last encounter, even after Madrid raced to a 2-0 lead, Barça swiftly responded with four unanswered goals before halftime.

This trend of scoring sprees characterized Barça’s wins: they netted four goals in the second half of the Bernabéu encounter last October and four goals in the first half of the 5-2 Supercopa victory in January, finishing with an impressive aggregate of 16-7 over the four exhilarating matches. Now, Barça seeks to secure five consecutive Clásico victories for only the second time in club history, matching the streak achieved under Guardiola from 2008-10. — Marsden

Are we witnessing Alonso’s biggest managerial challenge in the El Clásico?

Craig Burley and Steve Nicol discuss the upcoming Real Madrid vs. Barcelona match following both teams’ UCL victories.

Current Season Performance

REAL MADRID

This season, Madrid appears to have improved on last year’s squad, though they still have room for growth. The team shows a noticeable change in their out-of-possession gameplay, exhibiting more intensity and a cohesive defensive structure. Notably, Mbappé has been sensational, scoring in 10 out of his 11 club appearances this season, while Vinícius Júnior is nearing his best form. Although the midfield hasn’t fully clicked yet, Arda Güler has emerged as a crucial creative force, providing five assists for Mbappé this campaign.

Madrid’s LaLiga stats are impressive, with eight wins out of nine matches, although they did suffer a heavy 5-2 defeat to Atlético Madrid. Concerns have arisen over how they perform in major matches, such as the recent Madrid derby and the FIFA Club World Cup semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain, both of which ended in losses. — Kirkland

BARCELONA

Barcelona’s coach, Flick, admits that the team hasn’t yet reached last season’s lofty standards. He cites issues with positioning and a decrease in pressing intensity as key factors for their decline. Injuries have also played a role, sidelining players such as Raphinha, Yamal, Fermín López, Gavi, Joan García, Dani Olmo, and Robert Lewandowski. Despite these issues, the results have been decent, with two wins from three in the Champions League, the only loss coming from a late strike by Paris Saint-Germain. In LaLiga, they sit just two points behind Madrid.

Performance-wise, Barça has encountered trouble, almost facing defeat from Rayo Vallecano, conceding four against Sevilla, and narrowly escaping with a point from Girona last weekend. However, late-game victories, including a 6-1 thrashing of Olympiacos, have provided confidence as they prepare for Madrid. Both López and Yamal returned to the squad and are showing promise, with Raphinha also returning to training and likely available for the second half. — Marsden

Injury Updates Ahead of the Match

REAL MADRID

Madrid is hopeful about resolving the concerns in their right-back position, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal potentially returning just in time for the Clásico. On the left side of defense, Ferland Mendy is also nearing recovery, although the Clásico might arrive too soon for him, with Álvaro Carreras likely starting instead.

In central defense, Dean Huijsen is set to team up with Éder Militão, as Antonio Rüdiger is sidelined until December. Additionally, David Alaba was substituted at halftime against Getafe as a precaution. In midfield, Dani Ceballos is dealing with a muscular issue and is unlikely to feature against Barça. — Kirkland

BARCELONA

Barcelona will be without Joan García, Marc-André ter Stegen, Gavi, Olmo, and Lewandowski for the match, but some encouraging updates have emerged. Both Yamal and López returned to action last weekend, with López scoring an impressive hat trick using his weaker left foot against Olympiacos. Ferran Torres is back on the bench after being sidelined, and while he did not play, he’s expected to be ready for the weekend. Furthermore, Raphinha is back in training and could be utilized in the second half of the match. — Marsden

Key Matchups to Watch

Kylian Mbappé vs. Barcelona’s high line: Last year at the Bernabéu, Barcelona triumphed 4-0, but all goals came in the second half. Before halftime, it appeared to be a different story, with Madrid and Mbappé engaged in an intense battle, though he was caught offside a career-high eight times, limiting his impact.

Since then, Mbappé has transformed into a more confident player in a Madrid shirt, backed by Güler’s support. Contrarily, Barça is not operating as well as in Flick’s initial season, lacking the defensive discipline previously exhibited. If Madrid and Mbappé execute their strategy effectively this time around, there could be significant opportunities. — Kirkland

Lamine Yamal vs. Álvaro Carreras: In previous meetings with Benfica, Carreras proved effective in containing Yamal. However, Yamal tends to excel when matched against specific opponents, pumping him with motivation. With an average of 14.8 take-ons per game and 6.4 successful ones in LaLiga this season—both leading figures among Europe’s top five leagues—Yamal is sure to remain a threat. He has scored three career goals against Madrid, more than against any other club.

With Raphinha unavailable to start and key players like Lewandowski and Olmo absent, the pressure for Barça to perform will largely rest on Yamal’s shoulders. — Marsden

Game Predictions

The performance gap between these two teams was evident last season, but it may not have always reflected in the scorelines. Madrid appears significantly improved compared to last season, while Barça seems to have regressed. I predict Madrid will secure a 3-1 victory. — Kirkland

Despite Madrid’s improved stability, they face their own defensive challenges. Given that Alonso’s major matches have ended in defeats thus far, I expect Barça to exhibit an improvement in their recent performances. Ultimately, just two points separate the teams in the league, making a late tie acceptable for either side. I foresee a 2-2 draw. — Marsden
