NWSL Spotlight: Wave Set…

Two teams from the NWSL, the Kansas City Current and the San Diego Wave FC, will compete in the $5 million World Sevens Football (W7F) tournament, scheduled for December 5-7 at Beyond Bancard Field, home of the USL Super League’s Fort Lauderdale United FC.

Joining the two NWSL teams are Canada’s AFC Toronto, Mexico’s Club América and Tigres Femenil, Brazil’s Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, and Colombia’s Deportivo Cali Femenino. The tournament format includes two 15-minute halves with both group and knockout stages, offering the largest prize pool in women’s football.

“We are excited to welcome the Kansas City Current and San Diego Wave FC to our thrilling 7v7 tournament, where they will face off against elite clubs from across the Americas,” stated Sarah Cummins, CEO of W7F, in a press release. “This high-stakes event highlights the talent and ambition driving the women’s game today.”

“We expect fans to come out in support of these world-class teams as they vie for the championship and a substantial prize, underscoring our commitment to creating opportunities that recognize excellence and elevate women’s football on a global platform.”

Bayern Munich won the inaugural European tournament in May.

Adrian Jacob, the head of World Sevens Football, conveyed that this year’s W7F will be “bigger and better,” featuring less “European conservativism” and more excitement.

“We’re aiming for a faster, louder, and more dynamic experience. In the U.S., you’ve got to go all out and really make it spectacular,” stated Jacob.

All eight participants in the inaugural event in Portugal back in May were European clubs.

“Navigating the women’s football calendar can be tricky,” noted Jacob. “There are lots of overlaps and gaps. We’re trying to find those spaces to allow more than one continent to compete.”

The Current features international stars like Malawian Temwa Chawinga, the 2024 NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner as well as a 2025 Ballon d’Or nominee, along with Brazilian internationals Debinha, Lorena, and Bia Zaneratto. The team recently won the 2025 NWSL Shield and is coming into the postseason as the No. 1 seed.

“Our team thrives on intensity, creativity, and competition, which will align perfectly with the 7v7 format,” said Current assistant Milan Ivanovic in a release. “This tournament is a fantastic opportunity for our players to challenge themselves against some of the world’s best in a fast-paced setting. The global growth of women’s football is rapidly accelerating, and events like World Sevens Football help showcase the skills and excitement that define our sport. We can’t wait to bring the KC Current energy to Fort Lauderdale.”

San Diego Wave FC is also set to make their 7s debut with high aspirations. The team boasts several international talents, including Delphine Cascarino, Kenza Dali, standout goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, along with Adriana Leon and Melanie Barcenas. Cascarino was previously named to the NWSL Best XI and leads the Wave in goal contributions.

“It is an honor for San Diego Wave FC to represent the National Women’s Soccer League on this global platform,” stated Wave GM Camille Ashton in a press release. “Our club is dedicated to excellence, and we welcome opportunities like World Sevens Football to advance the game and provide our players another chance to shine.”
