Bompastor Criticizes…

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has criticized Mary Earps for showing a lack of respect towards England‘s coach Sarina Wiegman, while expressing strong support for goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

Former England goalkeeper Earps criticized Wiegman in her autobiography, claiming the manager rewarded “bad behaviour” by recalling Hampton to the squad and promoting her to the number one position.

Earps, who has played for Manchester United and is currently with Paris Saint-Germain, referred to Wiegman’s management in the situation as “bull—-,” as highlighted in an excerpt published by the Guardian.

Bompastor strongly defended Hampton following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over the London City Lionesses, urging Earps to reflect before making comments. “I think Hannah is doing well, but these comments can be tough to hear,” Bompastor remarked.

“Since I joined Chelsea, Hannah has shown remarkable growth as both an athlete and a person. I fully support her in this situation,” she added, noting that Hampton knows she can confide in her anytime.

Earps also claimed that Hampton’s behavior during England’s Euro 2022 success had occasionally disrupted training and affected team dynamics, though she refrained from giving specific instances.

Bompastor emphasized the importance of respect within the team, condemning Earps’ remarks. “It’s unacceptable not to show respect towards your teammates or your coaches. We’re speaking about Hannah, but my support also extends to Sarina Wiegman,” she stressed, referencing Wiegman’s impressive track record, including three consecutive Euro wins.

Despite Earps’ criticisms and the upcoming release of her book, Bompastor praised Hampton’s outstanding performance against London City, reflecting her professionalism and talent. “Her ability to perform under these circumstances showcases her exceptional skills and mental resilience,” Bompastor stated, adding that Hampton is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“If you compare what Hannah has previously said about Mary with Mary’s current statements about her, it’s clear who exhibits class; it’s certainly Hannah,” Bompastor concluded. In a prior statement, Hampton had commended Earps following her unexpected retirement in June, highlighting the undue scrutiny Earps faced despite her significant contributions to women’s goalkeeping. “Mary has changed the perception of goalkeeping in our sport,” Hampton said.

Bompastor assured that Chelsea will “find ways” to support Hampton, reiterating that she has the club’s unwavering backing.
