Arsenal talent Max Dowman made history as the youngest player ever to participate in the UEFA Champions League after making his debut from the bench on Tuesday.
This groundbreaking event took place during Arsenal‘s 3-0 victory against Slavia Prague, when Dowman substituted for Leandro Trossard in the 82nd minute.

At just 15 years and 308 days, Dowman has surpassed the previous record of Youssoufa Moukoko, who was 16 years and 18 days old when he first appeared for Borussia Dortmund in December 2020.
Dowman has also claimed a record that had stood for 26 years, previously held by Céléstine Babayaro, who was 16 years and 86 days when he debuted for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucharest in November 1994, a match from which he was sent off in the first half.
Since Moukoko’s debut, Lamine Yamal also started for Barcelona at 16 years and 68 days old against Antwerp in September 2023, placing him second on the list at that time.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his admiration for the young prospect.
“He takes on players as soon as he gets the ball. He starts dribbling and earns a foul. That’s a reflection of his personality and courage,” Arteta said.
“You can’t teach that; it’s innate. Regardless of his age, he adapted and performed well in this context.”
Previously, Dowman had already etched his name as Arsenal’s youngest starter when he was included in the lineup for their Carabao Cup match against Brighton last week.
This achievement came shortly after he became the second-youngest player — following teammate Ethan Nwaneri — to play in the Premier League, debuting as a substitute against Leeds in August.
Dowman, a left-footed attacking midfielder born in Chelmsford, Essex, joined Arsenal at the age of 5 in May 2015.
He first appeared for Arsenal’s under-18s at just 13 and became the youngest scorer in the UEFA Youth League at 14 while playing for the under-19s.
Last month, ESPN reported that Dowman had agreed to a scholarship arrangement that will become active when he turns 16 on December 31.
FIFA regulations state that players cannot sign a professional contract until they turn 17, so Arsenal faces the challenge of securing their young star, who is being pursued by clubs across Europe.
However, sources indicate that lifelong Arsenal supporter Dowman envisions his future with the club.
