On Monday, Adidas unveiled the “U.S. denim jersey,” a nostalgic shirt that harks back to the classic away jerseys worn by the United States men’s national team during the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
The jersey showcases a distinctive washed-denim aesthetic, enhanced with iconic ’90s star motifs, coinciding perfectly with the U.S. set to host the World Cup for the second time this summer, alongside co-hosts Mexico and Canada.
“With the U.S. Denim jersey, we aimed to capture the unique spirit of American soccer that has always stood out,” explained Inigo Turner, Adidas football’s design director. “This design embraces that essence with striking graphics, vibrant colors, and a vision that the game should resonate with the people.”
Adidas’ complete U.S. denim collection also features denim shorts adorned with a star motif, a denim track top with stylish paneling, and a denim cap embellished with star details.
In a nod to the legends who wore the iconic 1994 jerseys, promotional images feature former USMNT stars like Cobi Jones and Alexi Lalas. The collection will be available for purchase from Adidas starting March 10.
In the spirit of 1994, while the denim away jersey is making waves, the red-and-white striped home kit from that tournament may have inspired Nike designers in creating the upcoming home jerseys for this year’s World Cup.
Though the USMNT kits have yet to be revealed, a social media post gained traction over the weekend when a local grocer displayed a red-and-white striped kit for the U.S.
