Xabi Alonso has revealed that he has had discussions with Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and his players, emphasizing the club’s commitment to “turning results around” amid ongoing speculation about his position as head coach.
Just four months into his tenure at the Bernabéu, Alonso faces pressure after a dismal spell in which the team secured just one win in their last five matches, including a recent 1-1 draw against Girona.
Real Madrid is set to face another challenging fixture on Wednesday, traveling to compete against Athletic Club, following a matchup between title contenders Barcelona and Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.
“I’ve had positive conversations with Florentino,” Alonso said during a news conference on Tuesday. “Our focus is on turning the results around, and that’s what we’ve discussed.”
Alonso mentioned that he has convened with his squad to address ways to improve their performance, as the team navigates through three consecutive draws in LaLiga.
“Our discussions have revolved around our football, maintaining unity in the dressing room, and identifying areas for improvement to enhance our consistency,” he explained.
“Our primary concern is how to break this league streak. Tomorrow presents us with a promising opportunity.”
Regarding speculation surrounding his coaching future and potential signings to strengthen the squad, Alonso stated, “These are not questions for me.”
“We are where we are in the LaLiga table and the Champions League,” he noted. “We accept the pressure and criticism that comes with being at Real Madrid or any football club, but we are aware of our current situation.”
“Our focus is solely on winning games, aiming to be in a position to compete for trophies by April or May.”
