Alonso on 0-0: Madrid Must…

Xabi Alonso emphasized the importance of being “self-critical” yet “measured” in response to Real Madrid’s 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. He expressed these sentiments following a challenging LaLiga match that followed their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League.

Despite the recent setback, Madrid holds the top spot in the league with 31 points from 12 matches, while their rivals, Barcelona, were set to face Celta Vigo later on Sunday.

“We were prepared for a tough game,” Alonso remarked in his post-match press conference. “Vallecas has always been a difficult venue for us. Rayo challenges you intensely and pushes the game into a fast-paced rhythm.”

This season, Real has only dropped points in LaLiga twice: first in a 5-2 derby defeat to Atlético Madrid, and then in the recent draw with Rayo. “We aim to maintain stability in both our preparation and mindset,” Alonso stated.

“The league progresses from game to game… I focus on our continued growth, improvement, and maintaining a positive, constructive self-critique.”

“It’s still November, and there’s a long way ahead. We must set high demands for ourselves while being balanced in our approach.”

Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Clásico last month, yet they have faced scrutiny lately, particularly after their performance at Anfield.

“We understand our situation,” Alonso responded when asked about concerns over a potential “crisis.”

“In both good and bad times, it’s crucial to find balance. The season is lengthy.”

With Dani Carvajal sidelined due to injury, Trent Alexander-Arnold was anticipated to start at right-back but only made a late substitute appearance, with Federico Valverde taking his place instead.

“Trent requires a bit more time to recover after his injury,” Alonso explained. “Following the international break, he will be ready to prepare effectively for what’s next.”
