Former Barcelona player Dani Alves has been ordered to pay $2.25 million (£1.6M) in damages to Liga MX’s Pumas UNAM, following a decision by a Swiss court that upheld the ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Alves’ contract with Pumas was terminated in January 2023 after his arrest in Barcelona on charges of sexual abuse against a woman. He spent 14 months in jail before a Spanish court overturned his sexual assault conviction in March 2025.
Pumas initially requested $5 million in compensation, along with over $1 million for purchased image rights, citing a contractual clause related to early termination without just cause.
A FIFA Football Tribunal initially ruled against Pumas but this decision was overturned by CAS in September 2025.

On June 11, the Swiss Federal Court upheld the CAS ruling and confirmed the $2.25 million compensation amount. Additionally, Alves is required to pay 17,000 Swiss francs in legal fees and another 19,000 in procedural expenses.
Now 43, Alves became a co-owner of the Portuguese third-tier club Sporting Clube de São João de Ver earlier this year.
