Amorim: Sesko Faces…

MANCHESTER, England — Ruben Amorim acknowledged that Benjamin Sesko has faced challenges since his summer transfer to Manchester United, especially after criticism from former defender Gary Neville.

Since his £73.7 million ($97 million) move from RB Leipzig, Sesko has managed to score only two goals in 11 appearances.

In a frustrating 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, Sesko recorded just 21 touches in 90 minutes, prompting Neville to express his desire for more from the young striker, whom he labeled as “awkward.”

Responding to the criticism, Amorim conceded that Sesko has indeed found it difficult at United. However, ahead of their upcoming match against Tottenham on Saturday, he remains confident in the young forward’s potential to excel in the Premier League.

“It’s never enjoyable to hear criticism, but it’s a fact that he has struggled somewhat,” Amorim said.

“Let’s acknowledge that. It’s not personal, and that’s something I stress to the players.

“Such opinions can change in a matter of weeks. What is perceived as true today could be seen differently in a short time. This is difficult to accept.

“We are committed to supporting him and ensuring he is protected, as he works incredibly hard. Our goal is to help him succeed.”

Sesko was regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young strikers during his time at RB Leipzig, where he netted 39 goals in 87 appearances over two seasons.

His impressive form had drawn interest from both Arsenal and Newcastle before he ultimately chose to move to Old Trafford.

Amorim pointed out that Sesko could not have selected a more challenging club to play for, given the intense scrutiny facing United.

He emphasized the importance of allowing time for adaptation to a new team and country.

“I’m calm about the situation. He’s not,” Amorim remarked.

“I understand the pressures in football and that these growing pains are normal. Without prior experience here, the high expectations can weigh heavily. Being touted as the next big thing doesn’t make it easier when joining a club as demanding as this.

“If performance isn’t consistently high, criticism will come from all directions, including legends, pundits, and the media, and sometimes that criticism is valid.

“For a young player, grasping this reality while maintaining confidence is incredibly challenging. I believe he will establish himself as our long-term striker.

“He will face ups and downs, and that’s a standard part of a footballer’s journey.”
