Brazil’s head coach Carlo Ancelotti has expressed admiration for his former Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric in anticipation of Tuesday’s international friendly against Croatia.
Modric, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, departed from Madrid last summer after an illustrious career that saw him collect 28 trophies, including six Champions League titles and four Spanish championships.
Now 40 and playing for AC Milan, Modric continues to be a pivotal figure in midfield and is set to lead Croatia in the upcoming World Cup.
Ancelotti commented on Modric’s versatility, stating, “He can play in any position on the pitch because he’s a complete midfielder.”
“He’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached – a remarkable professional. Modric is genuinely unique; there is no one else like him in football today,” Ancelotti added.
Brazil approaches the match in Orlando, Florida, following a 2-1 loss to France.
“We clearly need to improve,” Ancelotti acknowledged. “We have a clear vision for our strategy going into the World Cup.”
“Maintaining our composure is essential, as both the coaching staff and the CBF are confident we’re on the right path. We’ve made solid progress so far.”
“We’re at a good stage in our preparations, and we will be ready for the significant matches of the World Cup.”
Brazil is aiming for their sixth World Cup title.
“For Brazil to clinch the World Cup, we need two things: abundant talent, which we have, and solid defense,” Ancelotti stated. “Relying solely on an offensive game is not enough.”
Real Madrid’s forward Vinícius Júnior and Barcelona‘s Raphinha have struggled to mirror their club performances at the national level.
Raphinha will miss the upcoming match after suffering a hamstring injury against France.
“Both Raphinha and Vini are among the world’s elite talents,” Ancelotti remarked. “I believe they will shine in the World Cup. Their character and personality are exceptional.”
The official announcement of Brazil’s World Cup squad is scheduled for May 18, but Ancelotti has already confirmed that Flamengo right-back Danilo will be included in the 26-player roster.
At 34, Danilo has participated in the last two World Cups but has not been a consistent starter for Flamengo.
“Danilo is vital, both on and off the pitch,” Ancelotti stated. “He’ll definitely be part of the final 26-man squad because I value his character, personality, and style of play. He’s versatile and can play in various defensive roles. Danilo will be one of the nine defenders.”
“I have a good idea regarding the starting lineup for our opening match, and the final squad is mostly solidified.”
