Schlotterbeck played the full match in Germany’s 2026 World Cup opener, a 7-1 rout of Curacao, and scored their second goal.
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann said Schlotterbeck will be a big loss on the field, praising his defensive quality and superb build-up play. He added that, although the tournament could have been Schlotterbeck’s, the player remains upbeat and is already looking ahead, and it’s a positive sign he’ll stay with the squad to contribute off the pitch as well.
Germany’s remaining centre-back options are Jonathan Tah, Rudiger, Waldemar Anton and Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw. Despite transfer links away from Borussia Dortmund, Schlotterbeck signed a contract extension with the club in April, keeping him there until 2031.
