Arbeloa: Bellingham…

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised midfielder Jude Bellingham on Tuesday, describing him as “a leader” and a “cornerstone” for the team moving forward. He made these remarks ahead of Madrid’s Champions League clash against Benfica on Wednesday, a match essential for securing their place in the knockout stage.

After a slow recovery from shoulder surgery last summer, Bellingham has shown impressive form in recent games, highlighted by his goal in last week’s 6-1 victory over Monaco.

“It’s not that [Bellingham] was surprising, but from day one, I recognized a player with incredible quality and skills,” Arbeloa stated at a press conference. “Anyone who has watched him play knows this, but seeing him up close is even more remarkable. Beyond his footballing talent, he strives to be a leader and a role model. Just 48 hours after a match, I found myself telling him to ‘stop running’—a phrase I rarely use. His commitment in training and his leadership have made me very proud to have Jude Bellingham on the team.”

So far this season, Bellingham has scored four goals in 17 LaLiga matches and two in six Champions League outings. Following the dismissal of Arbeloa’s predecessor, Xabi Alonso, he was among several players criticized by fans at the Bernabéu. His goal celebration against Monaco included a ‘drinking gesture’ in response to rumors regarding his personal life.

“You can respond in two ways: complain and seek legal help, or embrace the situation and enjoy it,” Bellingham told TNT Sports. “I know the truth about my personal life and what I contribute to the game and the team. The external noise doesn’t affect me much.”

Since taking over, Arbeloa has consistently commended Bellingham’s abilities. He emphasized on Tuesday, “On the pitch, he excels in many areas. He makes off-the-ball runs, finds himself in goal-scoring positions, has a powerful shot, and reads the game effectively. Though he is young, he possesses considerable experience, and he is set to be a foundational player for Real Madrid for years to come.”
