SUNDERLAND, England — Tottenham defender Cristian Romero exited the pitch in tears after suffering an injury during his team’s 1-0 defeat against Sunderland on Sunday in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old Argentina international limped off the field after a collision with Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky in the second half at the Stadium of Light.
The exact details of the injury remain unclear, but Romero was clearly upset as he left the field, unable to continue playing. Although he did not require a stretcher and exited on his own, his teammates offered him support as he walked away.
This injury raises concerns for Argentina as the World Cup approaches in June, where Romero is a vital player for the defending champions.
Kinsky was able to keep playing after receiving treatment for a head injury.
New Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi described Romero’s injury as “very bad,” although he was uncertain about its severity. “We will have to wait a few days to see how serious it is. I hope it won’t be a major issue because he is crucial for our team,” De Zerbi commented. “We need him to help us finish the season strongly and achieve our goals.”
The defeat leaves Tottenham in the relegation zone, currently sitting in 18th place, two points behind West Ham, who are in 17th, with only six matches remaining this season.
Argentina begins their World Cup campaign in Group J on June 16 against Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
