Arsenal have signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer from Leeds, agreeing a two-year contract with an option for a third season.
The 26-year-old Frenchman departs Leeds after seven seasons and 215 appearances, during which he recorded 70 clean sheets. Out of contract this summer after losing the No. 1 spot, he was available without a fee.
Meslier said he is proud to join Arsenal and eager to help the club win silverware, calling the Gunners the biggest club in England. BBC Sport first reported Arsenal’s interest on 30 June, and the move has now been confirmed.
He is expected to begin as Arsenal’s third-choice goalkeeper behind David Raya—last season’s Premier League Golden Glove winner with 19 clean sheets in 37 games as Arsenal won the title—and Kepa Arrizabalaga. With Arrizabalaga’s future uncertain, Meslier could be elevated to the No. 2 role if Kepa leaves.
His arrival is also likely to lead to a loan move for 20-year-old Tommy Setford this summer.
