Arteta: Brave VAR call…

Mikel Arteta praised the match officials for their courageous decision to disallow West Ham’s 94th-minute equalizer, a move he described as bold, which keeps Arsenal firmly on track for the Premier League title.

The Gunners secured a 1-0 victory at London Stadium on Sunday, with Leandro Trossard‘s deflected strike in the 83rd minute restoring their five-point lead over Manchester City.

However, the match was marred by significant controversy when substitute Callum Wilson thought he had scored a crucial goal for West Ham in their bid to avoid relegation, but VAR official Darren England called referee Chris Kavanagh to review the play.

After an extensive review, the goal was ruled out, allowing Arsenal to celebrate a pivotal win.

“It was a brave decision by the referees, but one that aligns with the principles they’ve been advocating all season,” Arteta remarked post-match. “When it’s warranted, I’ve criticized them, but today I must commend them for allowing the referee the chance to make a decision.”

“In the midst of the chaos, they provided clarity to enable him to make the right call. When evaluated from that perspective, it’s clear there was an error.”

“It should have been a free kick, and the goal had to be disallowed,” he continued. “So, congratulations to them for making a significant decision under tough circumstances.”

“Today, I’ve realized how challenging and extensive the role of a referee truly is. This is a moment that could shape the history and future of two massive clubs fighting to meet their objectives under immense pressure.”

In injury news, Ben White left the stadium in a knee brace, with Arteta indicating that “it doesn’t look good,” while Riccardo Calafiori was substituted at halftime due to an undisclosed issue.

Arsenal’s remaining fixtures in the Premier League are against Burnley and Crystal Palace. Should the Gunners achieve victories in both matches, they will secure the title ahead of City.
