Arteta challenges poor…

Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal to demonstrate their mental resilience in the pursuit of the Premier League title after suffering a tense 3-2 loss at home to Manchester United.

The Gunners ended the weekend just four points ahead of both Manchester City and Aston Villa following Matheus Cunha’s spectacular 87th-minute goal, marking United’s first league victory at Arsenal since 2017.

Arsenal initially took the lead thanks to a 29th-minute own goal from Lisandro Martinez, but a mistake by Martín Zubimendi allowed Bryan Mbeumo to equalize just eight minutes later.

United took the lead with a brilliant volley from Patrick Dorgu in the 50th minute, and after Mikel Merino scored an equalizer in the 84th minute, Cunha secured the win late on, leaving Arsenal with their third consecutive league game without a victory.

Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira expressed on Sky Sports post-match that “there are still some questions about the mental strength of the team” as they strive for their first league title since 2004. In response, Arteta stated: “That’s fine. We welcome all opinions, and they have their reasons. Ultimately, we must demonstrate the mental strength we possess on match days.”

“We performed excellently in Milan [defeating Inter 3-1 on Tuesday], but today we fell short. I’m not sure if it was mental fatigue from Italy, but we were lacking technically in key areas against a team that punishes mistakes ruthlessly. That was the crucial factor.”

Despite the loss being Arsenal’s first since May 2025, some fans booed the team off at full-time as they remain atop both the Premier League and Champions League standings.

Arteta addressed the boos, saying, “It doesn’t matter. We need to do more, so perhaps that wasn’t enough. We have to strive for excellence. When you give your all, you can find peace. We genuinely tried our best today, but we weren’t efficient enough against a well-organized team, and we were penalized for our errors.”

“This is the first time this season I’ve had to sit here and address a home loss. It’s all part of our journey to success. If teams never lost, there would be no competition. It’s about how we respond, and I am confident in our players and their determination to recover quickly.”

Arsenal will face Kairat Almaty on Wednesday in their final group stage match of the Champions League, having already secured a place in the round of 16 and aiming to complete the group phase with a perfect record.
