After Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth, Mikel Arteta emphasized that his team should not cite fatigue as a reason for their performance. He called on his players to reconnect with the “enjoyment” of playing football.
In a disappointing display at the Emirates, Arsenal missed a crucial chance to extend their lead over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to 12 points, suffering a 2-1 loss to the Cherries.
This defeat marks Arsenal’s third consecutive loss in domestic competitions, following their Carabao Cup final defeat against City and an unexpected early exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Southampton.
Arsenal will seek to rebound quickly in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon in London on Wednesday, holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg.
This upcoming match will be Arsenal’s 54th of the season, just three more than Manchester City has on their schedule.
In the loss against Bournemouth, several key players were notably off form, including captain Martin Ødegaard, star winger Bukayo Saka, and full-back Jurriën Timber, all sidelined due to injuries.

When asked about potential exhaustion among his squad, Arteta replied:
“I don’t want to make excuses about fatigue. We have played many matches every three days, and we must continue doing so. This is our context, and we need to embrace it and, most importantly, enjoy the opportunity.”
“I didn’t see that level of enjoyment from the team at crucial moments, nor the fight needed to shift the game’s momentum when it became tough. We will encounter various circumstances leading to June, and we must adapt and resolve them if we aim to reach our goals.”
Viktor Gyökeres stood out as one of the few players to exit Saturday’s match with any credit, scoring a first-half penalty that brought his season tally to 18 goals.
Looking ahead to the second leg against his former club Sporting at the Emirates, where a potential semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool looms, Gyökeres stated:
“We have many critical matches ahead, and we need to approach them with enthusiasm and enjoyment. It’s a fantastic challenge coming up in a few days; we must recover now, put this defeat behind us, and deliver a strong performance on Wednesday.”
