Atlante appoints Herrera…

The newly promoted Liga MX team Atlante has appointed former Mexico national coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera to lead them in their return to the top tier for the 2026-27 season.

Herrera, who was let go by the Costa Rica national team after their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, is making his own comeback to Liga MX and to Atlante, where he began his coaching career from 2002 to 2004.

In addition to two stints with the club (including one in 2010-11), he has managed six other Liga MX teams and served as head coach for the Mexico national team from 2013 to 2015.

For Atlante, this marks their first significant move following the acquisition of Liga MX franchise rights from Mazatlan FC. This re-entry into the top division ends a 12-year hiatus after being relegated in 2014.

The team, along with their new head coach, will host their home matches in Mexico City—a place where Herrera first gained international recognition as a manager by leading Club América to a dramatic league title in 2013.

Additionally, Herrera is a former player for Atlante, having won the Liga MX championship during the 1992-93 season.
