Lee Kang-In made an impressive start to his career with Atlético Madrid, scoring a stunning debut goal in their 2-0 victory over Málaga as they kicked off their LaLiga campaign.
Álex Baena also showcased his talent with a magnificent free kick, helping Diego Simeone’s squad secure their win with two late goals at the Metropolitano on Wednesday night.
“It wouldn’t be fair to highlight only Álex or Kang-In; both delivered outstanding performances,” Simeone remarked post-match. “Their goals were crucial for us. Málaga played exceptionally well.”
Regarding Lee’s debut, Simeone commented: “He is a player who must adjust to the game’s demands. His commitment to the team is evident.”
Lee broke the deadlock in the 70th minute, cutting in from the right and curling a left-footed shot into the far corner. Baena capped off the victory five minutes from full-time with a brilliant shot over the wall into the top corner.
When asked about Baena possibly replacing Antoine Griezmann in Atleti’s attack following his departure at the end of last season, Simeone clarified that was not the intention.
“I’m not looking for someone to fill Griezmann’s shoes; everyone is different,” Simeone explained. “Álex is currently in a great place, and his performance reflects his positive energy post-World Cup.”
The match started slowly, with neither goalkeeper facing threats until Málaga’s Alfonso Herrero made a save from Rodrigo Mendoza.
After the break, Atleti increased the pressure, with Ademola Lookman testing Herrero, followed by missed opportunities from Carlos Martín, Lee, and Dávid Hancko.
Former Paris Saint-Germain winger Lee made his mark, skillfully controlling Hancko’s crossfield ball, weaving past three defenders to score.
With Málaga unable to recover, Hancko nearly found the net again but hit the crossbar shortly after.
Baena sealed the win with his expertly taken free kick just outside the area after being fouled by Izan Merino.
