Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has stated that no decision has yet been made regarding the permanent transfer of Marcus Rashford, currently on loan from Manchester United. Deco emphasized that it’s not the right moment to consider this matter.
The 28-year-old forward joined FC Barcelona last summer for a season-long loan with an option for the club to purchase him outright at the end of the season for approximately €30 million (£26m, $35m).
Rashford has made a positive impact in Spain, netting six goals and providing nine assists in 19 appearances. However, Deco is not ready to look ahead just yet.
Deco commented in an interview with Cadena SER on Wednesday, “Now is not the time to make any decision regarding Rashford’s future. We’re pleased with his contributions to the team. He performed well again during our victory against Atlético Madrid, but we still have time to decide his future.”
Despite Rashford’s decent performance stats, he has seen reduced playing time following the November international break.
His last start for Barcelona was in the 4-2 victory over Celta Vigo on November 9, where he provided two assists. He missed the win against Athletic Club on November 22 due to illness.
Rashford has since returned to the bench in matches against Chelsea, as well as winning back-to-back LaLiga matches against Alavés and Atlético Madrid, with Raphinha returning from injury and reclaiming his position in the starting lineup.
Uncertainty Surrounds Robert Lewandowski’s Future at Barcelona
Barcelona is also faced with a decision regarding Robert Lewandowski as he nears the end of his contract next summer. The Polish striker has scored eight goals this season but missed a penalty in Tuesday’s 3-1 match against Atlético.
Deco remarked, “He currently has a contract with us, and we haven’t discussed his future.” Additionally, he ruled out any signings during the January transfer window to enhance Barcelona’s chances for success both domestically and in Europe, stating, “It’s hard to imagine any movement in the winter market in terms of incoming or outgoing players. We believe our current squad is adequate.”
Nevertheless, a potential departure could involve goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who has not played this season due to an injury but has recently returned to training.
Despite this, ter Stegen is expected to play behind Joan García and possibly even Wojciech Szczęsny, should he regain fitness, as he prepares for a potential place on Germany’s World Cup squad next summer.
Deco noted, “First, he needs medical clearance to return to play. Once he is available, it will be up to manager Hansi Flick to decide. Marc hopes to come back and will compete for either the first, second, or third goalkeeper position. What is clear is that he has a contract with Barça.”
