Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick commented on the private discussion he had with referee Juan Martínez Munuera following Thursday’s 4-0 loss to Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinal. Although he kept the details private, Flick acknowledged the positive nature of their communication.
Barcelona struggled against Atlético, and their frustration grew when a goal by Pau Cubarsí was disallowed for offside early in the second half. Flick labeled the situation a “mess,” voicing concerns over the refereeing in Spain as Barcelona lodged a formal complaint with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Refereeing Committee (CTA) after the match.
As he prepared for Monday’s La Liga match against Girona, Flick shared that he went to Martínez Munuera’s changing room after the game but eased his initial criticism of the officials. He noted that their dialogue was constructive yet remained confidential.
“I spoke with the referee after the game to understand the rationale behind the offside call. The communication was good, and I appreciate him welcoming me,” Flick said. “Our loss wasn’t his fault; we need to focus on what we can control—our quality, mentality, and attitude.”
With the second leg against Atlético scheduled for March 3, Barça’s immediate focus shifts back to the league. They dropped to second place after Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1. A victory over Girona could see them reclaim the top spot. Flick expressed his desire to see a positive response from his team following Thursday’s poor performance.
“We lacked the competitiveness needed against Atlético,” he remarked. “They were quicker in every duel and one-on-one situation. It’s crucial to see how we respond to this defeat.”
Injury Update: Rashford Out, Raphinha Returns
Barcelona will be unable to field Marcus Rashford, who is still recovering from a minor knee injury. Additionally, Pedri, Gavi, and Andreas Christensen are also sidelined due to injuries.
On a positive note, Raphinha will make his return to the squad. Flick emphasized Raphinha’s significance to the team’s dynamics, and they have recorded 20 wins, one draw, and a single loss in matches he participated in this season.
“Without him, we have faced five defeats in the 15 matches he missed. He truly elevates the intensity in training and on the pitch,” Flick stated. “Last season, I considered him one of the best players in the world.”

“Rashford will be unavailable for tomorrow’s match,” Flick confirmed. “His condition has improved, but we are taking things step by step. Raphinha, however, is ready to play, and his presence is vital for our team.”
