Hansi Flick indicated that Marcus Rashford‘s ambition to play for Barcelona should set an example for the club’s younger players, particularly after Dro Fernández expressed his desire to leave this month.
The 18-year-old Fernández informed Barça this week of his intention to trigger his €6 million ($7 million) release clause in January, with ESPN reporting that clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, and Chelsea are pursuing the talented teenager.
The news caught Barça off guard, and Coach Flick, who recently promoted Fernández to the first team and gave him his LaLiga and Champions League debuts this season, expressed his disappointment.
During a news conference on Saturday, Flick initially refrained from discussing Fernández’s situation until a move is finalized but hinted at it when asked about the potential for signing Rashford, who is on loan from Manchester United, on a permanent basis in the summer.
“Marcus has performed exceptionally well so far, so we need to handle this properly. However, it is [sporting director] Deco’s responsibility to plan for next season,” Flick stated.
“We still have a few months until then. Of course, with Marcus, we have a top-level player, and I greatly appreciate his desire to be here.”
“I want to convey this to the young players from La Masia: we are Barça, one of the best teams in the world. We offer you the chance to train with us, develop your skills alongside the best players, and receive the necessary support and confidence.”
“If you want to play for Barça, it must be with your entire heart. This is my message: 100%. These colors must mean everything to you. If not, I don’t want you.”
Flick also had to restrain himself when asked about Fernández, who has been compared to Thiago Alcantara and Pedri, while also noting the influence of his surrounding team on his decisions.
“I previously mentioned that if it’s not finalized, I won’t discuss it, but that’s football,” he remarked regarding the youngster’s upcoming exit.
“Sometimes, disagreement arises from their choices, but they are 18 – old enough to make their own decisions, influenced by those around them.”
“When I witness such situations… no, that’s enough. I don’t want to speak further.”
While Fernández’s next destination remains unconfirmed, sources have indicated that PSG is now in a strong position to secure his signature, mainly due to Coach Luis Enrique’s relationship with the player’s agent, Ivan de la Peña.
Additionally, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is also poised to leave Barcelona this month, with reports suggesting he is close to a loan move to LaLiga side Girona until the summer to secure regular playing time before the World Cup.
When asked about the situation with the German international, Flick said, “It’s Marc’s decision. He knows what he wants for his future. We’ve discussed this many times over the past weeks.”

“Even if he is on loan, he remains a Barça player and our captain. He has been an iconic player for this club over the last decade. Whatever he decides, we will respect his wishes.”
Flick expressed hope that midfielder Marc Bernal will remain with the team, following reports that the club might let him go on loan after his recovery from a lengthy injury.
“I hope he stays,” Flick stated. “My stance is clear, but in football, anything can happen. From my end, I want him to remain here. He has returned from a serious injury, is adjusting well, and we want to support him in reaching his potential – and beyond. He has significant talent.”
LaLiga leaders Barça are set to resume league play on Sunday against Real Sociedad, who are unbeaten in their last three matches following the appointment of American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo.
“They have gained confidence from their recent victories and draws,” Flick noted about the challenge ahead as his team aims for a 12th consecutive win across all competitions.
“I know the coach well; we’ve been neighbors in the same region of Germany in the past. I’m looking forward to seeing him tomorrow.”
“It will be a tough match as they possess excellent players and confidence from their recent games, but our goal is to win LaLiga, and that starts with winning tomorrow.”
