Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, has likened coach Hansi Flick to a ‘Gladiator’ due to his resemblance to actor Russell Crowe.
Flick, who is 60 years old, took over from Xavi Hernández as the manager of Barça last year and successfully guided the Blaugrana to three titles in his debut season, including LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa.
Laporta expressed his excitement regarding Flick’s successful return of glory to the Catalan club, drawing a comparison to Crowe, who portrayed the lead character in the Oscar-winning film Gladiator in 2000.
“Flick embodies the Gladiator spirit; he strongly resembles Russell Crowe,” Laporta told 3Cat. “He’s been an exceptional addition for us and is a top-notch coach. He interacts well with everyone and displays a great sensitivity.
“However, he’s also quite demanding and isn’t one to change his plans easily. He has that German decisiveness, yet he balances it with a very thoughtful approach toward his team.”
“I feel very comfortable working with him and am genuinely pleased to have him as the head coach of Barça.”
After a successful initial season, Flick aims to lead Barça to its first Champions League title since 2015, following last season’s semifinal exit.

Additionally, Laporta emphasized his intention to host an event honoring Lionel Messi, which couldn’t be arranged in 2021 when the Argentine departed the club, a time when the tribute to club legend Johan Cruyff took precedence.
“Cruyff,” Laporta answered when questioned about whether the Dutch legend or Messi should be regarded as the greater figure in the club’s history.
“There was an exceptional bond with Messi, but it sadly deteriorated when we failed to renew his contract. Nonetheless, we have made significant progress in mending our relationship since then.
“What we aspire to do is provide him with the homage he rightfully deserves here in Barcelona someday.”
