Belgium International and…

Former Belgium international Zinho Vanheusden has announced his retirement from professional football at just 26 years old, following ongoing struggles with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.

Vanheusden began his career at Inter Milan but did not make a first-team appearance. Instead, he went on loan to teams including Standard Liège, Genoa, AZ Alkmaar, and K.V. Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League, before concluding his career at Marbella FC in Spain.

After spending seven years in the academy at Standard Liège, he joined Inter as a promising young talent in 2015.

Unfortunately, due to recurring injuries, including a severe third ACL injury, Vanheusden has decided to end his career, which included one international appearance for Belgium in a friendly against Ivory Coast in 2020.

He managed to make just seven appearances for Marbella before formally announcing his retirement.

“Today, I am making a decision I never imagined I would have to make at this age,” Vanheusden shared on Instagram.

“After 22 years in football — starting when I was four until now — my journey as a professional player is coming to an end.

“Football has shaped who I am today. It provided me with a life I never dreamed I could have… The past few years have been incredibly challenging, far heavier than they appeared. Injuries, surgeries, injections, medications… I gave everything to make a comeback, but it became increasingly difficult.”

“I was constantly chasing my form, often playing through pain, and I lived each day uncertain of how my body would respond after training or matches. Despite my relentless fight to be the player I aspired to be, new obstacles kept arising.”

“In my heart, I will always wish to be a footballer, but my body has been signaling that it’s time to stop for a while now. Therefore, out of respect for myself, my health, and my responsibilities as a father, I am making this choice.”

“While my time as a player has ended, football will always hold a special place in my heart. It will remain a part of who I am and what I strive to become. Thank you for these 22 years. While it is a sad farewell, I look back with immense pride at what I have experienced.”
