MADRID — Jude Bellingham characterized his drinking gesture during his goal celebration as “a bit of a joke,” responding to speculation regarding his off-field conduct after netting a goal in Real Madrid‘s convincing 6-1 victory over Monaco on Tuesday.
The England midfielder scored the sixth goal of the match at the Bernabéu, just days after fans had booed him due to the team’s recent performances.
He celebrated with laughter, lifting his hands to his mouth in a mocking manner, later explaining that the gesture was a response to false reports about his personal life.

“A lot of people say a lot of things,” Bellingham told TNT Sports. “You can either complain or send a lawyer, or you can just go with it and have some fun. It was a light-hearted remark towards the fans and those spreading gossip.”
“I know the truth about my personal life and what I contribute to the game and the team. Outside opinions don’t really affect me, but it’s nice to share a laugh.”
Recently, Bellingham refuted media claims — including those from ESPN — suggesting he was one of the players skeptical of Xabi Alonso’s coaching methods prior to Alonso’s dismissal and the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa.
“Don’t believe everything you read,” Bellingham stated on his ‘JB5’ app.
He was part of the group booed by Bernabéu supporters during Madrid’s 2-0 LaLiga win over Levante on Saturday.
“Fans spend their hard-earned money and save up to support us at Real Madrid games; they have the right to express their opinions,” he remarked on Tuesday. “While it can be tough to hear, they’re entitled to say what they think.”
Coach Arbeloa commended Bellingham’s work ethic in the match against Monaco, which elevated Madrid to 15 points from seven Champions League games.
“Today, I saw the Bernabéu supporting players like Vinícius, [Junior], and Kylian [Mbappé], as well as Jude,” Arbeloa noted.
“Their effort was exceptional. Bellingham’s work rate was extraordinary. That dedication is what we need: a committed team. It was a great night for everyone.”
