Berhalter Emotional After…

Gregg Berhalter, the manager of Chicago Fire FC, was deeply moved after witnessing his son, Sebastian Berhalter, score his first World Cup goal for the United States men’s national team during the final group stage match against Türkiye.

In this match, Berhalter made a significant impact, contributing both a goal and an assist despite the team’s 3-2 defeat to Türkiye, playing the entire 90 minutes.

Reflecting on the experience, Berhalter shared with ESPN, “A lot was going through my mind when he scored. It’s incredible to see your son play in a World Cup and to have him score and assist in such a crucial game.” He continued, “Words can hardly express the pride I feel. While on my red-eye flight home, I found myself in tears, contemplating his journey and what this moment meant to him. That’s what really occupied my thoughts.”

Gregg Berhalter previously held the position of head coach for the U.S. men’s national team from 2018 to 2024, overseeing the squad during the last World Cup in Qatar. Despite his role, he did not include his son Sebastian in any national team call-ups during his time as coach.

“I think about it often,” said Gregg Berhalter. “I never could have chosen him for the team, but I trust that everything has unfolded as it should. Now is his time.”

The USMNT made it to the round of 32, topping Group D with wins over Paraguay and Australia.

The team’s next challenge is against Bosnia-Herzegovina in San Francisco on July 1. “I’m looking forward to Wednesday’s match,” Gregg Berhalter expressed. “I feel a strong connection to the team, especially now that Sebastian is involved. I’m rooting for them and hoping they continue to excel.”

“They’ve been performing well and are clearly ready for this moment. I have complete confidence that we’ll play well tomorrow [Wednesday].”
