After the match, Cape Verde coach Bubista expressed his frustration when a player from Uruguay abandoned his efforts to assist a cramping Cape Verde player, Telmo Arcanjo, to join an attack that resulted in the equalizing goal.
Cape Verde initially led 1-0 with a spectacular free-kick from Kevin Pina, only to find themselves trailing at halftime.
The equalizer from Uruguay came in an unexpected sequence when Federico Viñas dropped Telmo’s leg mid-treatment to join the offensive play. Following a header from Sidny Cabral that hit the post, Maxi Araújo scored with a header to level the match.
Following the game, Bubista voiced his disappointment, particularly since he holds Bielsa in high esteem for promoting fair play. “I felt upset from that incident—Bielsa taught us about fair play in his press conferences and during matches. We learned fair play from his example,” he noted.
He added, “It was frustrating, but it’s part of the learning experience for our team. Perhaps we could have acted differently, like kicking the ball out of play, but we’re trying to play the game our way. Players often face pressure, which applies to Uruguay too. We will learn from what transpired.”
After the match, Bielsa reflected on his team’s failure to seize their opportunities, stating, “The main issue was that we started the second half with momentum and a lead, yet we failed to capitalize. We didn’t create any significant threats.”
Bielsa also acknowledged that the team struggled with their finishing in the 2-2 draw.
In their first World Cup match without the presence of Luis Suárez since 2010, Uruguay narrowly avoided defeat against Saudi Arabia, scoring their only goal late in the game through Araújo. Despite leading the attack, Viñas and Federico Viñas were largely ineffective.
On Sunday night, Bielsa opted for a different strategy, starting only Viñas in the attack while introducing midfielder Agustín Canobbio, who made a significant impact by scoring Uruguay’s second goal. However, it was Canobbio’s missed opportunity in the second half that could have turned the game in their favor.
