Boca to Expand Bombonera…

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — In response to River Plate’s proposal to cover its Monumental Stadium, Boca Juniors unveiled plans to significantly enhance La Bombonera, making it the most extensive renovation in its history.

The upgrades, estimated to cost between $50 million and $60 million, aim to raise seating capacity from 57,000 to 80,000. Boca announced that the renovation work is set to commence during the upcoming 2026 World Cup and will extend for a minimum of two years.

“La Bombonera will not be relocated, nor will a new venue be constructed. We are expanding it while honoring its original character,” stated the Argentine club in a project overview shared with the media late Tuesday.

Commonly referred to as La Bombonera due to its box-shaped design, the Alberto J. Armando Stadium opened its doors in 1940 in the La Boca neighborhood, and its expansion has long been a demand from the club’s supporters.

Currently, less than half of the 126,000 active members can attend league and international matches, with non-members facing restrictions on access.

Two months ago, River Plate disclosed plans to install a roof at its stadium and increase its capacity to over 100,000 in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which Argentina will co-host alongside Paraguay, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco to celebrate the tournament’s centenary.
