BODO, Norway — Inter Milan, last season’s Champions League runner-up, fell victim to an upset at the hands of Bodø/Glimt, losing 3-1 in the first leg of their playoff match on Wednesday.

The Norwegian underdog has emerged as one of the standout stories of this season’s tournament, having previously defeated Manchester City at home and Atlético Madrid away to secure their playoff berth.

Situated north of the Arctic Circle, Bodø/Glimt is farther north than any team in Champions League history.

Inter, currently leading Serie A, was aiming for its seventh consecutive win in all competitions but found themselves trailing by the 20th minute when midfielder Sondre Brunstad Fet skillfully scored.

Though forward Pio Esposito equalized with a well-placed finish ten minutes later, the home side struck again with two quick goals in the second half, both showcasing fast passing and generous assists.

Kasper Høgh assisted Jens Petter Hauge, who unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner for the second goal at the 61st minute. Hauge, who had a brief stint in Serie A with AC Milan, celebrated by jumping and kicking the corner flag.

“I feel incredible and am just grateful to be part of this team. I’m thrilled to contribute with assists and a goal. Playing alongside such talented teammates makes it all the better,” Høgh expressed.

The home crowd at the 8,000-capacity Aspmyra Stadion erupted again just three minutes later when Høgh scored the third goal, set up by Ole Didrik Blomberg.

With the return leg scheduled for next Tuesday, Inter — a finalist in two of the last three Champions League seasons — now faces a significant challenge to move on to the next round.

“It was a disappointing result and a tough night for us, but we need to remain calm and believe we can turn things around at home,” said Inter midfielder Petar Sucic.
