LOS ANGELES — Forward Denis Bouanga, known for his impressive scoring ability, has officially signed a multiyear contract extension with LAFC.
The club announced the extension on Wednesday, confirming Bouanga’s status as a designated player through 2028, with an option for the 2029-30 MLS season.
Since joining from Ligue 1‘s St-Étienne in August 2022, Bouanga has emerged as one of MLS’s standout players, becoming LAFC’s all-time leading goal-scorer last season. He boasts a record of 101 goals and 42 assists across 152 appearances for LAFC.
“I’m thankful to LAFC for their trust in me,” Bouanga stated. “From the very start, my family and I have felt at home in Los Angeles. It’s a privilege to represent this club and its fans every time I wear the jersey. I believe in what we’re building here, and I’m eager to continue improving, winning more trophies, and helping this club achieve even greater heights.”
The 31-year-old forward had previously been signed through 2027 and had attracted considerable interest from Brazilian club Fluminense during the offseason, with reports suggesting a deal was near.
However, LAFC has successfully secured their key partner alongside superstar Son Heung-Min, ensuring the continuity of their dynamic scoring duo as the club aims to compete for championships this season.
“Since his arrival, Denis has performed at an elite level with remarkable consistency and has contributed to our success in winning multiple trophies,” said LAFC general manager John Thorrington. “This new contract reflects that commitment. We are proud of what he has achieved here and look forward to continuing this journey together.”
Bouanga quickly made his mark, playing a vital role in LAFC’s journey to their first MLS Cup and a Supporters’ Shield trophy shortly after his arrival in 2022.
Representing Gabon internationally, he matched LAFC’s franchise record with 38 goals in all competitions in 2023, earning his first of three consecutive MLS Best XI selections. He then finished the 2024 season as the Golden Boot runner-up with 20 goals, accumulating his second consecutive MLS All-Star selection.
Last year, Bouanga reached a personal best with 24 goals during the regular season, finishing as the Golden Boot runner-up yet again while becoming the first MLS player to achieve 20 goals in three consecutive seasons.
LAFC transformed into an offensive powerhouse after Son’s midseason arrival, with the duo scoring an impressive 25 goals and registering eight assists as they formed a formidable partnership, including 18 consecutive goals scored over a span of nearly two months.
This season, Bouanga is off to a stellar start, netting a hat trick in the CONCACAF Champions Cup last week in Honduras and adding another goal and an assist in LAFC’s 3-0 win against defending MLS Cup champions Inter Miami CF, marking a strong beginning to the MLS regular season.
