Burnley has officially been relegated to the Championship after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday, confirming their drop from the Premier League.
The Lancashire team had just returned to the top flight this season but now faces an insurmountable 13-point deficit to 17th-place West Ham United with four matches remaining.
This marks Burnley’s third relegation in as many seasons in the Premier League and their fifth overall, trailing only Norwich City, which has seen six relegations.
Wolverhampton has already confirmed their relegation, leaving just one spot unresolved. Currently, Tottenham resides in the final relegation spot.
A return to the second tier has seemed unavoidable for Scott Parker’s team, who have managed to win only one of their last 25 league matches. The defeat at Turf Moor against Man City extended Burnley’s winless streak at home to 13 league games.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring just five minutes into the match at a quiet Turf Moor, helping Manchester City take the top position in the standings.
Burnley had opportunities to score, but they could not capitalize, failing to bother Gianluigi Donnarumma in their quest for a goal that would have delayed their relegation confirmation.
“We’ve all known this outcome was getting closer,” Parker told Sky Sports. “Now, it’s official. We’ve fallen short today.”
“I can’t fault my team. They have given their all every single day. There are moments we’ve lacked quality, and our points tally reflects that. Tonight’s match is a representation of who we are as a team.”
“I am incredibly proud of them, and I know some may mock me for saying so. But that’s my honest assessment.”
“These players have faced a huge challenge, and we didn’t quite meet it. We needed to consistently overachieve this season, and we just didn’t.”
Parker did not confirm whether he would remain as the coach to lead Burnley back to the Premier League.
“As for my future, we’ve all given everything and made sacrifices, but we’ve fallen short,” he stated. “I take full responsibility for that. We will continue to push forward and reflect on the season ahead.”
