Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets expressed his desire to see football expand globally by hosting LaLiga matches in international markets. However, he urged league officials to establish clear terms and negotiations before finalizing any specific games.
Previously, LaLiga scrapped plans to hold a regular-season match between Villarreal and Barcelona at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, citing backlash from fans and players in Spain as the reason for the cancellation.
The decision was made by Relevent, the league’s North American partner.
“I think there’s some confusion. The players aren’t against the idea; they just want clear conditions, proper negotiations, and to understand what the future holds, like anyone else,” said Busquets.
“Many things have been dealt with this way. It shouldn’t be arbitrary for two teams to be chosen without clarity on conditions or future plans. I think it’s great for the sport and this league to expand internationally, provided there’s agreement and mutual benefit for growth.”
Busquets could be nearing the end of his football career as Inter Miami prepares to face FC Cincinnati on Sunday in the Eastern Conference semifinal at TQL Stadium. Unlike the first round of MLS playoffs, this match will follow a 90-minute knockout format.
“Since the announcement, I’ve realized time is running out. This competition is all about playoffs, where elimination can happen at any moment. I’ve come to terms with it, and I’m looking forward to possibly extending my time with two more games. That would be a nice way to end my journey. I’m focused on the upcoming game against Cincinnati, which is crucial. Personally, I’m aware that the end of my career is drawing closer, but I’m at peace with that,” said Busquets.
Inter Miami advanced to the knockout round of the 2025 MLS playoffs after defeating Nashville SC in the first round. Although Miami initially led the best-of-three series, Nashville managed to force a decisive third game that could have ended Busquets’ MLS journey.
Despite the potential ramifications of a loss, Busquets maintains his preparation for each game as usual.
“I’m calm as always and have accepted it all. As I mentioned, two more games would be ideal. I found myself in a similar situation two weeks ago, and I’ve largely come to terms with everything,” he said.
Busquets joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023, alongside his longtime teammates Jordi Alba and Lionel Messi.
He celebrated victories in the 2023 inaugural Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, playing a significant role in helping the club set a league record for the most points in a single season. Now, he hopes to cap off his two-and-a-half years with the club by securing one last trophy.
